FormscanBy Mark Nunan - CHARMING STAR was never going over 1m2f at Leopardstown last time but is given a chance to redeem himself over a more suitable distance. Successful over 1m4f at Listowel last year, he landed a maiden hurdle here in March and has a nice racing weight under a good apprentice. A visor clearly didn't work on his last outing but he has sported cheekpieces for both career wins and they are reapplied. Squire Danagher is on a hat-trick after two wins at Dundalk and he has placed form on turf including on soft ground at this venue. Vera Verto was progressive in the autumn with wins on contrasting ground at Listowel and Newmarket and her yard is in fine form. Zoffman, disappointing at the Galway festival and out of action since, ran a cracker on last year's reappearance when second in a premier handicap at Cork.%A0

It might not have seemed that likely in the dip but as soon as he meets the rising ground, he grows another leg. Going a trip has helped him and today he looked like he would even go further. Easy ground has also been a factor. He's very small and I thought with the light weight he had a real good chance. You are always surprised when they win as easy as that, he did it very well. He's doing things right and he's going places. I had him in a three-year-old handicap at Navan but I was keen to come here because I thought we'd go for the money. I have schooled him and he jumps quite well but he's so small that I can't imagine how he could make a jumper. It's terrific. It's great for the lads (Rock Bar Syndicate) who are great local supporters of mine. This is massive and it's huge for all of us to be honest. I'm very grateful for the support. We felt we should come to Galway as that's what a syndicate horse is all about and there was an element of a social runner with him. I got it completely wrong with this fella as I thought he wanted very fast ground. I didn't expect him to handle the ground but obviously I'm wrong and he probably wants a bit of juice in it. It's a much improved performance and Jack's 7lb is huge. He gave him a beautiful ride all the way, never got checked at any stage. He loves jumping, jumping is the secret to him. He's a horse that doesn't do a stroke at home. The hurdles just set him alight, he absolutely loves it. Good ground, he wouldn't be one for the winter. Two and a-half plus and he will stay three miles. I'd say that's why Richard Hannon sold him in the first place, he was gone a bit sick of the Flat. Next year, definitely (go on the Flat), but this year I'd like to keep him going over hurdles as he is enjoying it so much. It’s great to get that win for him. The race cut with a few non-runners but it was the main two that fought it out and he found enough to get the job done. His run in the Cork Derby suggested he had a chance in a race like this and the slower ground didn’t really matter. He goes on anything bar the extremes. He keeps a lot to himself, a lot of time he just does what he needs to. I'd say there is plenty of engine there. We'll probably go back to the Flat with him. Hopefully we can tip away in the better handicaps over a mile-and-six or two miles. He stays well. He'll probably come back here for a Flat race in April, at the minute that's the plan. After the last race, we took the opportunity to geld him. He actually took it quite well, so he didn't miss much. We came here with an idea of a campaign on grass. Nice to get it done and we will look forward to the main campaign now. He's a very relaxed horse, but then sometimes we wonder would he be too relaxed. Around the back there was no distress signals and then, when it opened up, he just came and picked up. It was very simply done, and Billy knows the horse. Lovely ride and just produced him well.
