Wayne Lordan fresh from another Group sprint winning success at the weekend on Gordon Lord Byron is all ready for a battle in Australia as he heads down under to partner Slade Power in the VRC Sprint Classic at Flemington on November 8th.
Lordan has been lucky enough to ride some of the best sprinters in recent years with success at the highest levels on Sole Power, Gordon Lord Byron and of course winning two Group One contests this season on Ed Lynam’s charge.
Speaking on The Weekend That Was with Donn McClean on RacingFM yesterday evening the jockey was naturally excited to take on the challenge of keeping the 5 year old unbeaten in 2014 against some of the worlds top opposition in what will very likely be Slade Power’s final run of his career.
“They have three or four top sprinters that we are going to be taking on, it’s going to be a good race and I’m really looking forward to it.”
“He’s our top sprinter over here and I don’t mind going in to battle with him, it’s very exciting and when you have a horse like him even more so. He’s having a great year and wouldn’t it be great, as he is to be retired soon, if he can go out on a good note.”
Lordan felt he had improved between his Group One victory at Ascot in the Diamond Jubilee and his victory in the Darley July Cup at Newmarket this year, “he still rolled about a bit at Ascot and was a bit babyish when he got there but definitely at Newmarket he did everything perfect, travelled and quickened up and ran to the line”.
On the Australian trip as a whole Lordan will possibly be on the look out for a couple of spare rides at the carnival although recognising they may be hard to come by.
“I will have a few days off over there and go racing to get a feel of things. I’m going to ride a good bit of work for a few people out there but it’s the biggest carnival of the year and there are not going to be too many spare rides.”
