FormscanBy Michael Graham - St Mark’s Basilica looked a sure-fire future winner when finishing runner-up on debut in a maiden over course and distance in July. He was then pitched into the Group One Phoenix Stakes and, indeed was backed down to favouritism, before coming home fifth. That level of form (beaten less than five lengths in a Group One) makes him the horse to beat, and on both of his starts he encountered some cut in the ground. However, this ground is likely to be deep with such an unsettled forecast. His sire, Siyouni, isn’t known for deep-ground progeny so preference is for LOCH LEIN. She put in a very promising debut when third at this track last month. With that run under her belt, there ought to be plenty of improvement. Conversely, her sire (Invincible Spirit) has plenty of progeny who go through soft and heavy ground. There are a host of potentially interesting newcomers taking part including Baseman, Duke Of Mantua, Prince Of Verona and Dixie Bluebell.
