FormscanBy Mark Nunan - There have been plenty who have questioned the worth of this year’s Irish and Epsom Derby form and perhaps it is the case that they lacked the strength in depth of previous renewals. Nonetheless, GOLD MAZE, who took his chance in both races on successive weekends and was beaten around 11 lengths each time, still looks to have this maiden at his mercy if running anywhere close to form. The Golden Horn colt was runner-up in a Group 3 over course and distance prior to his Classic outings, and should be all the better for a little break since his mid-division effort at Epsom. The well-bred Gauntlet ran okay on debut at Naas and is a possible improver, while the likes of Roundel, Avarice, Daylight Come and Karbasann are fairly closely-matched on ratings and are place contenders. It’s interesting that Coeur D’or has been persevered with by Dermot Weld after a very long absence since a promising debut fourth at Cork last year, and he’s one to keep an eye on for the future.
