Review NAAS 4TH AUG

Paul Carberry took the riding honours at this mixed meeting when partnering a 32/1 double in the two hurdle races on the card aboard Alpha Rhythm and Harry The Ear.

Alpha Rhythm was patiently-ridden to lead on the run-in of the 2m3f maiden hurdle for a length and a half verdict over the gambled-on Native Churchtown (1/1-4/5fav).

'He came late to win a bumper first time out here last summer but we only realised recently that he needs to be ridden that way. He stays well, and they went a hell of a clip there,' said Noel Meade.

Carberry gave Harry The Ear a typically confident ride in the handicap hurdle, with Mick Halford's top-weight touching down in front after the last to beat Recess by a length.

'He's very tough and will mix it between the Flat and hurdles. However we have to find Flat races with no starting stalls as he's claustrophobic,' said Halford's assistant Louise Boswell.

There was an exciting start to the afternoon when The Gollymocky (6/1-7/2fav) rallied close home for Robbie Burke to dead-heat with the Cathy Gannon-ridden Secret Wish.

Most racegoers were of the opinion that Secret Wish had held on until the judges verdict, and a relieved Patrick Prendergast said, 'I'll settle for that, and he's on the market.'

The market also proved a good guide to the juvenile maiden when Lord Admiral (8/1-9/2) was produced with a well-timed challenge by Davy Condon to beat Memorandum by a length.

'He missed the break on his debut, and I thought he was entitled to win on form. He's a weak horse, and would struggle on soft ground,' said trainer Charles O'Brien.

Eddie Lynam saddled his 13th winner of the season when Luggala also swooped late under Declan McDonogh to land the fillies mile maiden.

'Mick Kinane said to leave it as late as possible when getting off her last time. She's so light that you can't do any hard work with her at home,' said Lynam.

Jamie Moriarty (18) recorded his eighth winner when bringing Jumbo Romance from off the pace to beat Moyeala by half a length in the apprentice handicap.

'She's been knocking on the door all year and deserved that. That will do her confidence good, and she may run again at the Curragh on Sunday,' said successful trainer Tim Doyle.

Lasquini Du Moulin led two furlongs out under Jamie Codd when making a winning debut in the bumper.

'He was bought in France to go jumping, and will head to Tralee or Listowel for a winners bumper,' said trainer Willie Mullins.

Meanwhile at Cork, John Oxx and Johnny Murtagh teamed up for a Listed race double with Juliette and Dossier.

The Group 3 Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster next month is on the agenda for Juliette, who led home a 1-2 for the Currabeg yard in the Give Thanks Stakes.

Oxx's team of four made sure of a strong pace in this mile and a half event, and Juliette struck the front a furlong out to beat stablemate Kiteflyer by a length.

Impressive Naas maiden winner Dossier followed up in the Plattinum Stakes, also leading at the furlong pole and staying on gamely to deny Twiggy's Sister by a neck.

'She's had some problems, and will go next for the Group 2 Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on September 6,' said Oxx.
