Review GOWRAN PARK 10TH AUG

Leading apprentice jockey Chris Hayes recorded an 879/1 treble at Gowran today, partnering winners for trainers Tom Cooper, Pat Hughes and Michael Grassick to move onto the 27 winner mark for the season.

Hayes' first win was on Cooper's Skyscape, who won on her Irish debut, in the State Street Ireland EBF Fillies Maiden.

The daughter of Zafonic raced prominently before leading over a furlong out, eventually winning by a comfortable length and a half.

A delighted Cooper later mentioned 'we bought her for 20,000Gns, out of Amanda Perrett's yard, at the Newmarket July Sales and it appears to be money well spent.'

He added 'Skyscape did a serious piece of work at The Curragh recently but does get very nervous in the stalls and needs to be led in last. Tralee is a possibility but the type of stalls may not suit her.'

Half an hour later Hayes was on board Pat Hughes' Elkras Wings, winner of division 1 of the Derrinstown Stud Apprentice Handicap.

Owned by the Honest Chaps Syndicate, Hughes later reported that the winner, who was making her handicap debut, is 'not very strong and may need a break after that. I told Chris to hold onto her and the gaps opened up nicely in the end.'

Hayes completed a quick hat-trick, in the next (division 2 of the Derrinstown Stud Apprentice Handicap) on Grassick's Sehoya.

Only twelfth entering the straight, the daughter of Second Empire stayed on strongly from two furlongs out, avoiding traffic problems to win by a length and a half.

The winner was the first owned by Grassick's son and namesake who holds an amateur riders license and also bred the winner.

The Aidan O'Brien trained Altius belied a lack of market confidence (5/4 - 3/1) to win the opening opening two year old maiden.

The half brother to three Listed winners raced prominently throughout, striking the front a furlong and a half out before staying on well for a length and a half success over Lileagh.

O'Brien was not racing to make a comment about the winning son of Danehill.

Dermot Weld's Westering Home was another big priced winner from a top yard, winning the Gowran Park Nursery Handicap, under Shane Gorey, at 12/1.

Weld was represented by his son Chris who reported 'the first time blinkers helped sharpen her up and, although it a surprise, she did have a good run behind Ivan Denisovich in June. She'll go for something similar again now.'

Following O'Brien and Weld's successes, John Oxx's Szewinska's win in the Gowran Park Golf Club Open Week Handicap meant the opening three races were won by leading three trainers this season.

The winning daughter of Green Desert hit the front a furlong out before holding the late challenge of Devious Diva by the narrowest of margins.

Oxx later reported 'Szewinska is owned by Eamonn Keena, whose family have had horses with me since 1975 and are some of my longest standing owners.'

Winning jockey Cathy Gannon was recording her 96st career win, and more importantly, her first since losing her riding allowance.

Kevin Prendergast got on the mark with Qassas, winner of the Lynam Merit Maiden under Declan McDonogh.
