Review CORK 5TH JAN

Mister Top Notch was the star on a day when there were plenty of impressive winners at Cork.

Ninetieth Minute (4/6f) was a hotpot in the conditions hurdle but he could only finish third as Davy Fitzgerald's decent chaser showed his class back over the smaller obstacles.

Conor O'Dwyer exuded confidence on the gelding as he took up the running four out and cruised to a two-and-a-half length victory over Time To Sell.

'I'll enter him for the Leopardstown Chase next Sunday but if it looks like he's going to be top-weight in that he might run in the Pertemps qualifier over hurdles on the same day,' said Fitzgerald.

Front-running proved a popular tactic and Willie Mullins saddled a double with two easy winners Capel Lad and J'y Vole.

J'y Vole made a highly impressive debut over fences in the mares beginners chase.

Davy Condon soon established himself in front and the French-bred mare forged clear of her rivals going out on the last circuit.

The 4/6f was well clear when nearest pursuer Carraig Na Gcapall fell four out and she was left to home a distance clear of Strylea.

'She did it nicely. There is a mares chase at Thurles on the 17th although I have Pomme Tiepy in that. They could both run,' said Mullins.

'Hopefully she'll keep progressing. I wouldn't mind going over a longer trip with her as she should easily go three miles.'

Capel Lad (7/2f) made every yard to land the Kanturk Maiden Hurdle, stretching clear down the straight, under hands and heels encouragement from Condon, to post a nine-length margin over Broughtons Folly.

'He's showing a bit of the promise that he showed in his bumpers. He'll stick to hurdling this season and we could try a longer trip,' said Mullins.

The Budgee turned the handicap chase into a procession, grabbing the lead early and proving much too strong for his rivals as he sauntered to a six-length success under Davy Russell.

'My idea is to run in the Clarkson Chase at Leopardstown at the end of the month,' revealed trainer Michael Hourigan junior.

'That's the ideal situation but we'll get him home first and see how he is. He's an improving horse.'

Brazilian-bred Fantoche took the other maiden hurdle for Jessica Harrington and Tommy Treacy, staying on strongly down the straight after hitting the lead after four out.

'He was second in a Group 1 in Brazil on bottomless ground and stays very well,' revealed the trainer's husband Johnny.

Stonehouse gained due reward for her consistency when making all to take the opening mares handicap hurdle.
