Upped again to a mile after winning a premier nursery over that distance at Listowel in September, Magnanimous ran out an impressive winner of the Listed Glencairn Stakes at Leopardstown.
Shane Crosse always seemed happy in the HLT Partnership silks, aboard the Joseph O’Brien-trained 8/1 scorer.
Waited with behind the leaders, the Mehmas three-year-old made his move from three furlongs out and he was prominent travelling smoothly in the straight.
For minimum encouragement from the saddle Magnanimous led a furlong out, clear inside the final furlong to easily account for Fourhometwo and Sinawann by two lengths and a length and a quarter.
“His run against Poetic Flare here was a good run but last time Shane said he was all over the place on the ground at Naas,” said O’Brien’s representative Brendan Powell.
“He said he did that really well today. I'd say that's by far his best run.
“He was shouldering a lot of weight in his nurseries last year. He's a genuine horse and he loves this ground.
“The half-sister (Seisai) ran a cracker in the first to finish third.
“Hopefully he'll go on from here. He's got speed for seven, stays this trip well and will probably stay a bit further even in time. I'm sure there will be plenty of options for him.”
The Stewards requested a report from Joseph Patrick O'Brien, trainer as to the apparent improvement in form of Magnanimous, placed first, as compared with its most recent run in Naas. Brendan Powell, authorized representative, stated that the horse hit all the ridges the last day and didn't act on the conditions. Having considered the evidence the Stewards noted the explanations.
