Lake George springs a surprise

James Barrett, best remembered for winning the Pierse Hurdle with Barker back in 2008, recorded his first winner since then as his Lake George caused a 20/1 surprise in Division One of the Limerick GAA Handicap over six furlongs.

Rory Cleary always had the entire son of Alkaadhem on the gallop and he pushed his mount clear from two furlongs out before just holding off the challenge of the fast finishing Danehill Tapdancer with Johnny Murtagh aboard by a short head at the line.

The winner who was 33/1 this morning was having his first run for Barrett having raced in three 2yo maidens for Mags Mullins last year.

The winning trainer has only resumed training recently after taking a break from the game.

Barrett who trains in Borris, Co Carlow was not available for comment after the race as he went back to the stable yard with his winner.
