Permission was given for Santafiora (GB) to go early to post.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Declamation (IRE), ridden by Joey Haynes and trained by John Butler, which was restrained from a wide draw and settled at the rear of the field, before staying on under a hands and heels ride to finish eighth, beaten by 5 lengths.
The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race; the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding, during routine testing shortly after the race, failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated his instructions had been to drop in from stall 12, take his time and obtain the best possible placing.
Haynes explained that after jumping moderately he immediately restrained Declamation (IRE) in order to fold across behind runners and find a position closer to the rail.
He added that near the 3 furlong marker he was following Roaring Rory (GB) which was not taking him into the race, however, he was reluctant to commence a forward move and go wide at this stage of the race.
He further added that he asked the gelding to quicken approaching 2 furlongs out and angled wide to obtain a clear run, whereupon Declamation (IRE) stayed on at the one pace through to the line.
The trainer both confirmed the instructions and that the ride had accorded with them, before adding that he was satisfied with the way Haynes had ridden Declamation (IRE) on this occasion.
Their explanations were noted.
The winner, Aquarius (IRE), appeared to show improved form compared with its previous run at Wolverhampton on 18 November 2019 where the filly finished ninth of twelve, beaten by 8¼ lengths.
Michael Appleby’s explanation that Aquarius (IRE) had benefitted from a trouble-free run on this occasion was noted.
Following the race, Hayley Turner reported that Maid Millie (GB), which started second favourite and finished third, hung right-handed and Callum Rodriguez reported that Santafiora (GB), which started favourite and finished sixth, hung right-handed off the home bend.
