FormscanBy Tom Weekes - CAYENNE PEPPER was beaten by top mare Magical in the 2020 renewal, was subsequently second in the Irish Oaks and while underwhelming on reappearance in the Tattersalls Gold Cup in May, that was on unsuitably testing ground and is top rated on adjusted ratings. Santa Barbara carried a big reputation into the English 1,000 Guineas and while she ran with credit, failed to land a blow on good-to-soft ground in the Oaks. She will be better suited to good but needs to prove top class ability. Another 3yo Shale was beaten on heavy ground at Royal Ascot last week but seems ground-versatile and it is concerning she has yet to replicate last year's juvenile form. Epona Plays' recent Group wins have been on soft but being progressive, could be equally as effective returning to good (having won a lesser race on that sound surface in the past). Thundering Nights was a nose second in the New York Stakes at Belmont on June 4 on a recent start but is held by Capenne Pepper in the Blandford last September. Insinuendo, her yard's second-string, is progressing but faces her biggest test while Silence Please, in first-time cheek-pieces, needs to improve on overall form. Oodnadatta faces a tough task on reappearance.
