J.P. McManus' Calthor was the well-backed winner (show 2/1 — 5/4f) of the Killeen Sportsgrounds (C&G) Maiden Hurdle at Ballinrobe, scoring for Stayers Hurdle winning trainer Gavin Cromwell and jockey Mark Walsh.

Walsh, himself successful on McManus' Fakir D'Oudairies in the Grade 1 Melling Chase at the Aintree Festival last weekend, made all on the son of Califet who today encountered yielding ground for the first time since his 2019 point-to-point win, for previous trainer Ellmarie Holden.

Following today's race Cromwell's assistant Feidhlim Cunningham stated “it’s good to see him eventually win a race and the ground there made a big difference.

“He’ll kick on for the summer from here and it’s just good to see him break his maiden tag.”
