Review CURRAGH 26TH JUN

Chorist, second in the Blanford Stakes in 2002 and winner of the same event over course and distance last September, showed her liking for the Curragh as she took the featured Audi Pretty Polly Stakes.

In it's initial year as a Group 1 contest, Darryl Holland soon had the 5yo in front and she fought off the determined challenge of favourite, Alexander Goldrun in the closing stages to triumph by 1/2L.

William Haggas, the successful trainer was an absentee but his wife Maureen was on hand to comment, 'this is the bravest filly I've ever had anything to do with.'

She then added, 'every jockey who has ever ridden her has said they'd like to marry her as she's so tough and brave and gives 150% every time she runs.'

Holland chose a trip to Ireland over Newcastle and he said, 'I always knew I was going to hold on when the other filly came to me and she enjoyed herself on what is a really good surface.'

In the other chief race of interest, the home team managed to repel a brace of English raiders for the Group 3 Betfair Curragh Cup.

John Oxx's Mkuzi in the hands of Michael Kinane showed considerable stamina to beat Barry Hills' 100/30 joint favourite, Dubai Success by half a length.

Oxx was also responsible for the third placed Cruzspiel who had endeavoured to make most of the running.

The winning handler wasn't definite about plans for the Sheikh Mohammed owned winner, saying, 'he got the trip well and he's been a terrific horse for us, earning a lot of prize-money.'

Oxx and Kinane later doubled up when in the closing 1m maiden, newcomer, Trefflich repelled the strong late challenge of Leeside Music by a head.

Successful on Guineas weekend and unlucky on her sole start since, Sugarhoneybaby provided Noel Meade with a very pleasing win in the valuable fillies h'cap as he also saddled 3rd placed, Shoshana.

Seven pound claimer Padraig Beggy was aboard the 14/1 bottom-weight and Meade commented, 'she missed the break last time but still went up 3Ib and the handicapper was probably right now.'

Fellow National Hunt handler, Dessie Hughes was in the number one spot following the 50 to 80 h'cap. Due Respect went to the start early under John Egan to get the 16/1 chance settled.

Once previously a winner, that coming when victorious in a 2yo maiden for Richard Hannon at Chester back in 2002, the son of Danehill didn't go un-backed here despite his price but paid 42.10 with the tote.

Ballydoyle newcomer Rowan Tree had what his trainer Aidan O'Brien termed 'a lovely introduction' to take the 6f maiden and the 4/5 shot now has any number of options open including the Tyros Stakes.

Aidan's wife Ann Marie was in the winner's enclosure as an owner following the success of Stylish Dane, trained by her father Joe Crowley to land the 1m 2f h'cap under Seamie Heffernan.

Unfavourable results led to just two investors sharing in the Jackpot which was carried over from the previous evening, each receiving a dividend of E18,531.30, the pool having reached E49,417.00.
