Cork racecourse is the venue for the inaugural ‘Tote Backs Your Team Handicap Hurdle’ tomorrow evening. In all, 12 runners owned by syndicate and racing clubs will line up for the €15,000 prize fund in the first race of its kind in Ireland. The 12 runners represent 12 different syndicates or clubs with over 200 registered members all set to target the winner’s enclosure.

The pilot scheme launched by Horse Racing Ireland and Tote is aimed at further promoting the syndicate and club ownership model and drive their continued increased participation.

One of those contenders is Motcomb Street which carries the colours of Our Local Syndicate, a syndicate which was formed on the back of the National Racehorse Trainer Open Morning.

Trainer John Shark Hanlon, said: “The group of six lads from Kilkenny, Wexford and Dublin got together at our open morning in May. It proves that welcoming people behind the scenes of a working yard can really whet the appetite and further entice them to become involved as owners.”

County Wicklow trainer Francis Flood, commented: “The conditions of this race suited my runner, Alcander, and the fact the race is restricted made it even more appealing to make an entry. The hospitality on offer for owners should make it a fun and enjoyable evenings racing.”

Amber Byrne, Owner Development Manager, Horse Racing Ireland, commented: “We are grateful to the owners and trainers who have supported the first race of the initiative. To have a runner owned by a group formed from one of the National Racehorse Trainer Open Mornings is an added bonus. We are really looking forward to welcoming all the syndicates and clubs to Cork. They are sure to add to the atmosphere on the night and will hopefully help promote the fun of multiple ownership.”
