Hurling for Cancer Research raised €160,000 for the Irish Cancer Society this year, and a cheque was presented at Listowel this afternoon.

The annual charity hurling match, the brainchild of Jim Bolger and Davy Russell, is in its sixth year and has now raised a total of €700,000 for cancer research.

The hurling game, which brings together stars of the past and present from both the racing and wider sporting worlds, was once again held at St Conleth’s Park in Newbridge last month and was attended by a crowd of almost 4,000.

Among those who took part on the evening were TJ Reid, Peter Canavan, Niall Quinn, Stephen Hunt and jockeys Jamie Codd and Mikey Fogarty.

Bolger said, “We enjoyed a phenomenal game of hurling this year with the largest attendance and the highest scoring game since its inception.

“However the biggest victory of all is raising so much money to support the Irish Cancer Society’s cancer research. It is a disease that has unfortunately touched almost every family in Ireland.

“One way we can fight back against the disease is through cancer research, and by discovering new and better ways to diagnose and treat cancer.

“It’s heartening to see so many sporting legends take to the pitch and show their support for the work of the Irish Cancer Society.”
