Forgotten Rules will likely bid to regain his crown in the Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup following his pleasing return to action at the Curragh.

The Dermot Weld-trained six-year-old won the Ascot Group Two in 2014, but after suffering his first defeat when third in last summer's Gold Cup, little went right during the rest of his campaign.

Making his first appearance since disappointing in the Long Distance Cup almost a year ago, Forgotten Rules travelled like the winner for much of the two-mile journey on Sunday before losing out in a close finish to Jim Bolger's Twilight Payment.

Connections are hopeful he will improve for the outing and a return to Berkshire on October 15th will be on the cards if he stays sound.

Fiona Craig, advisor to owners Moyglare Stud, said: " I think we have to be happy with how he ran considering he'd been off for nearly a year.

"Pat (Smullen) came in and rather put his hands up and said he got to the front too soon, but he was giving 12lb to a three-year-old who is obviously a pretty good horse.

"He (Forgotten Rules) was cruising and Kevin (Manning) was off the bridle half a mile out on the winner, but he keeps going and probably stays a bit better than our horse.

"I haven't heard anything this morning so I assume he's fine. He did hang a little bit right under pressure, but the ground was like a quagmire.

"The plan was to go to Ascot, but obviously that's a couple of weeks away yet so we'll just see how he is in the next few days and take a view from there."
